What Technology Should a Modern Istanbul Dental Clinic Have?

A modern Istanbul dental clinic should have CBCT 3D imaging, an intraoral scanner, CAD/CAM milling and an in-house laboratory — in the hands of a specialist. I am Dr. Sadık Taki, a Specialist Prosthodontist. "modern technology" appears on almost every Istanbul clinic website, usually next to a stock photo. As someone who uses this equipment daily and has published research that depends on it, let me cut through the marketing and tell you which technology actually changes your result — and which is window-dressing.

CBCT: the single most important piece of equipment

If a clinic places implants, it must have CBCT (cone-beam computed tomography). This is a low-dose three-dimensional scanner. A traditional flat X-ray (an OPG or panoramic film) shows you a shadow; CBCT shows the true volume of bone, the exact path of the inferior alveolar nerve, and how far the maxillary sinus has dropped. Without it, an implant surgeon is estimating depth and angle from a 2D image — which is how nerves get injured and implants get placed into the sinus.

My own research depends on this imaging. In a study I co-authored on condyle positions in patients with temporomandibular joint disorder, we used CBCT precisely because it reveals three-dimensional anatomy that flat films cannot (Kocaeli Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Dergisi, 2023; doi.org/10.30934/kusbed.1271577). The same principle applies to every implant case: you plan from accurate 3D data, not a guess.

Intraoral scanners: the end of putty impressions

An intraoral scanner is a small wand that captures a precise digital model of your teeth and gums in minutes — no gag-inducing putty trays. For prosthetic work, that precision matters enormously. The closer the digital model is to reality, the better your crowns, veneers and bridges fit at the margin, and a well-fitting margin is what keeps your gums healthy for years. For dental tourists, scanners have a second benefit: a digital file can be shared and reviewed before you ever board a flight, making your pre-travel plan far more reliable than a few phone photos.

CAD/CAM and digital design

CAD/CAM — computer-aided design and manufacturing — lets the clinician design your restoration on screen and mill it from a solid block of zirconia or glass-ceramic with consistent accuracy. Combined with the intraoral scan, this digital chain removes much of the human variability that creeps into hand-made work. It is also what makes well-fitting restorations achievable within the compressed timeline a travelling patient needs.

An in-house laboratory: the quiet differentiator

This is the capability patients overlook and I value most. An in-house, specialist-supervised laboratory means the technician sits metres from the chair. When a crown's shade or contour needs adjusting, it happens the same day, under the eye of the prosthodontist, instead of being couriered to a high-volume external lab that has never met you. For full-arch and smile cases, this is the difference between a result that is merely acceptable and one that is genuinely individualised.

The technology that protects you: sterilisation and digital records

• Class B autoclaves with traceable cycles — the backbone of infection control, aligned with the cross-infection standards UK patients know from the GDC and BDA.
• Single-use items where required, and proper instrument tracking.
• Digital patient records so your CBCT, scans and treatment plan can be shared with your dentist back in the UK if needed.

Why the operator matters more than the machine

Here is the part the brochures leave out: a CBCT scanner does not place an implant, and a milling machine does not design a smile. Both are tools that amplify the skill of whoever uses them. My published work on the variables that drive marginal bone loss around implants (Quintessence International, 2020; doi.org/10.3290/J.QI.A43864) makes the point clearly — long-term success depends on clinical decisions like implant position, loading and the prosthetic design, not on owning expensive equipment. The right combination is modern technology plus a specialist prosthodontist. One without the other disappoints.
